Quality of Life - Westside Regional Pool

On Monday, January 12, 2015, El Paso City Council approved the final concept for the new 50-meter competition-ready pool which will be built on the city’s Westside. Council also directed staff to accelerate work on a similar pool planned for the Eastside. Construction of each project will be funded by the 2012 Quality of Life bonds approved by voters.

The design approved for the Westside Pool includes 24 short lanes, eight long lanes, a moveable bulkhead, and will be housed in a 35,000-square foot building adjacent to the existing Leo Cancellare Pool at 650 Wallenberg Drive.

The Leo Cancellare pool will be integrated into the design of the new pool for warm-up and cool-down for competitive swimmers.

The approved budget of the Westside Pool is $13.4 million dollars. To help pay for this augmented design, City Council directed staff to delay construction of improvements to Westside Community Park and a new park in the Coronado area of the Westside. The development of those projects, also funded by 2012 Quality of Life Bond, will commence after most of the other Quality of Life Bond projects have been funded and only if funds remain available.

Today’s action will allow time for highly-detailed construction documents to be finalized. Construction will begin later this year and be completed in in 2016.

City council also directed staff to ensure a similar project on the Eastside advances as quickly as possible. A similar competition pool is presently being master planned as part of the larger Eastside Regional Park which will be built on Hueco Club Road in Far East El Paso.
