The El Paso Police Department's Headquarters Motors Unit consists of five motorcycle officers and one motorcycle sergeant. Motorcycle units are a specialized enforcement tool capable of many diverse assignments. The unit's primary responsibility is to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents in El Paso through the enforcement of traffic laws in high congestion areas. The motorcycles are assigned to various areas based upon a monthly analysis of vehicle collision locations. The unit generally concentrates on the freeways throughout the El Paso area. The motor officers primarily work weekday shift assignments when traffic congestion is heavier and the versatility of the motorcycle is at its full potential.
Officers assigned to the Headquarters Motor Unit are veteran officers with a great deal of experience and training in handling a motorcycle. Due to the nature of their job, the motorcycle officers must be alert and aware of their surroundings at all times for their own safety. It is an extremely difficult position due to a variety of safety concerns and environment exposure issues.
