International Museum Day

International Museum Day was started in 1977 and is dedicated to raising awareness of the important role museums can play in society.

This years theme is “Museums (memory + creativity) = social change.” It reflects the role of museums in displaying and protecting heritage while recognizing the inventiveness and vitality of all cultures.

Museum of Archaeology

The museum is free and open to the public with extended hours from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm for this day only.

Cottonwood Springs Archaeological Site
2:00 to 3:00 pm
Free Admission

Dr. Meade Kemrer explains this site with four villages dated to A.D. 900-1400 as well as numerous rock art images and a defensive system. This program is sponsored by the El Paso Archaeological Society in collaboration with the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.

Sky Stories, Ancient and Modern

Free Admission - Pre-Registration Required

Alex Mares Speaking

Native American storyteller Alex Mares and astronomer Francisco Carreto-Parra join up in this program to interweave Native American stories and knowledge of the cosmos with astronomical knowledge from ancient people of many cultures and modern science. Local astronomers are providing telescopes for public viewing.

Photography, filming and recording of this event is limited. The event is free to the public and suitable for adults and children of elementary school age and above. Each participant should bring a flashlight.

Note, only those pre-registered can attend the Sky Stories program. Advance reservations required and limited to sixty people due to limited seating and parking. Detailed schedule and registration at 915-755-4332 or guidamr@elpasotexas.gov.

Museum of Art

Please join us for a worldwide celebration of museums! The El Paso Museum of Art invites you to enter the world of museums and discover all they have to offer. Activities for the day will give you an inside look at what goes on behind the walls and let you be a part of it. here will also be gallery tours and refreshments.

Admission to the Museum and International Museum Day programs are Free

  • Respond to the artwork and share your experience in a temporary gallery display.
  • Learn about different museum jobs from staff members.
  • Get a glimpse of how exhibits are designed.
  • Vote for your favorite wall color for the upcoming Discovering the American Modern 1907-1936 exhibit.

Museum of History

The EPMH, located in downtown El Paso’s cultural district, will host a series of free events in recognition of IMD including a special unveiling of the cornerstone and time capsule laid in El Paso’s City Hall in 1979. Also on display will be time capsules from the original city hall buried in 1899 and from the ASARCO vocational school buried in 1975.

Gost Hunters Southwest The museum will offer two ghost tours led by Chris Medina, founder of Ghost Hunters of the Southwest, and his team to recreate Cleveland Square from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Contact Sue Taylor at 351-3588 for more information.

Night in the Museum Sleepover – BOOKED!
Midnight to 8:00AM
Ages 9 to 14

EPMH will host a sleepover in the Museum that was built on a cemetery. The museum will provide flashlight tours of museum galleries, breakfast at night, games, and more.

Cornerstones of Memory: El Paso Time Capsules
4:00 PM

EPMH will feature a special unveiling of the cornerstone and time capsule laid in El Paso’s City Hall in 1979. Also on display will be time capsules from the original city hall buried in 1899 and from the ASARCO vocational school buried in 1975. Both time capsules included original newspapers, documents, and more.

The museum will be hosting a series of Skype tours with participating museums worldwide showcasing exhibits and programs that are currently underway and will provide learning opportunities using new technologies.
