Flooding has plagued Montwood Drive in East El Paso for years. To remedy that unsafe and inconvenient situation, the City of El Paso’s Engineering and Construction Management Department initiated the reconstruction of Montwood Drive between McRae Boulevard and Yarbrough Dive in January 2013.
During construction, traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction. The city has established a reduced speed limit of 25 miles per hour in the construction zone. Motorists are encouraged to follow marked detours and avoid cutting through residential neighborhoods around the construction zone. Furthermore, pedestrians are urged to stay clear of the construction site.
Once this project is completed the area will feature brand new concrete roadways with curb and gutters better capable of draining water in to a newly installed storm sewer system. A key modifications being implemented as part of this project will further accommodate floodwater by adding capacity to the Eastwood Dam. These improvements will serve to funnel water away from city streets and neighborhoods and create a safe passage for thousands motorists who use the busy thoroughfare.
Also included along the entire length of the project are the replacements of water distribution lines. Sewer service lines will be replaced on Honolulu Drive, Trinidad Drive, and Windrock Drive.
The Montwood project will not only improve the streets and drainage system, but it will also enhance the surrounding area by providing new landscaping and an irrigation system at the medians. New sidewalks will also be part of the project, and will incorporate ADA compliant ramps.
The 24-month project is expected to cost $11,089,329.84.
