When are plans required to be submitted for a food establishment?
Plans are required for new or extensively remodeled buildings?
Who do I call to inspect my food establishment after my building is constructed or remodeled?
This information will be provided to you on a referral form upon filing the food establishment application. If the form is misplaced, call (915)541-4434 for assistance.
When do I apply for a food establishment permit and license?
Apply prior to taking over an existing food establishment because permits and licenses do not transfer from person to person and prior to opening a new food establishment. First, submit your new building or major remodel plans for review @ City Hall, Two Civic Center Plaza, 5th Floor. You can submit your food establishment application at that time.
Where do I locate the food establishment application form?
The form is available at City Hall, 5th floor; at Tillman Health Center, 222 S. Campbell Street, Room 200; or you can request a copy be sent via email to you. (Please see email contact at bottom of the page.)
How do I fill out the food establishment application?
The form has step by step instructions on the back side of the application.
Can I open the restaurant, bakery, market, day care, bar, etc. immediately after I apply?
You can not open the food establishment until a passing site assessment is conducted by the Department of Public Health.
Who do I call for an inspection?
At the time you submit your food establishment application, you will be provided with a site assessment form which provides the contact information for the inspector assigned.
When do I call for an inspection?
Ideally, you should call for inspection (site assessment) 10 weekdays prior to your planned opening day and 24 hours after submitting your food establishment application. This will provide enough time for scheduling and for any corrections that may be needed.
How soon after I call will the inspection be conducted?
Ideally, the inspection will be conducted within 3 working days.
What equipment do I need to open a restaurant?
A list of requirements is available at the Tillman Health Center 222 S. Campbell, or City Hall 5th floor, or via email as per email address in last bullet below.
I’m just selling pre-packaged candy and sodas. Why do I need a food establishment permit?
A food establishment is defined as; an operation that stores, prepares, packages, serves, vends, or otherwise provides food for human consumption.
Food is defined as; A raw, or cooked, or processed edible substance, ice, beverage, or ingredient used or intended for use or for sale in whole or part for human consumption, or chewing gum.
Although the requirements are quite basic; providing candy, sodas or chewing gum for public consumption requires a food establishment permit.
Are there any fees assessed to the application?
Yes. The application processing fee is $53. No application processing fee is assessed to Temporary Food Establishments operating @ festivals, bazaars, etc. Site assessment fees and food establishment license fees are assessed and vary depending on the type of food establishment. Temporary Food Establishments are assessed a license fee only.
